Geirry Garcia, one of the prominent figures in the Philippine animation industry, passed away last Saturday, February 13, 2010 according to Sir Ricky Orellana of Mowelfund and the Animation Council of the Philippines (ACPI).
Geirry was the man behind the Philippines first animated series "Panday" and the Philippines first commercial animated movie "Ibong Adarna". He also did work on many more features such as Captain Barbell, Darna, and Isko: Adventures in Animasia to name a few.
I briefly got to spend time with him in Korea during a creative and animation expo a few years back. He struck me as a fun person to be around and was quite the character, posing gamely with the giant mascots walking around the convention center.
We were supposed to work on a comic book project together featuring one of his characters but I guess we'll never get to do it now.
Godspeed, Geirry.
